Weekend Visit: Portland Art Museum

Today I visited the Portland Art Museum to check out their featured exhibit Portland Collects: Riches of a City. The must-see exhibit runs through May 22nd, so you only have one more week to check it out! It's an incredibly varied exhibit showcasing art from the collections of Portland residents including works by Diebenkorn, Lichtenstein, Daumier, Ansel Adams, Mapplethorpe, Avedon, Picasso, Reynolds, Mucha, Lautrec, Tiffany silver, Japanese ceramics, Mughal period jewelry and so much more (whew! That's a lot of awesome).

Two of my favorite works on display were photographs by Berenice Abbott (a new-to-me photographer). There's a sublime photo of New York at night and also a photograph of the path of a bouncing ball (She's most well known for her images of New York City and her scientific photography).

I also took in the AutoMagic exhibit featuring the black and white photography of Wisconsin native Ray K. Metzker, which is on display until July 31st. Metzker's work is simply mesmerizing. I especially liked his collages of multiple images, and I loved the extreme contrast of light and dark in his work. It's difficult for me to put into words just how amazing these photographs are, so you'll just need to go in person (that is, if you're in the Portland area). This is not to be missed!
